Doug Walker is the Chief Programs Director at Mercy Family Center in New Orleans. He has practiced as a Clinical Psychologist for the past twenty-three years and is celebrating his 22nd year with Mercy this year. Dr. Walker has worked alongside the international school community since 2006 in providing training and consultation in student and educator mental health and wellbeing. Dr. Walker has served as technical advisor to the US State Department’s Office of Overseas Schools in Central America and Africa. He currently serves as a consultant to the Council of International Schools and the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children. In 2016, Dr. Walker joined Fukushima University as Fulbright Specialist Scholarship recipient. During his brief tenure in Fukushima City he conducted lectures in disaster mental health, and collaborative research into peer-to-peer support post 2011 Tōhoku earthquake, tsunami and level 7 meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.

Keri-Lee is in her 21st year as an educator and has taught at schools in New Zealand, England, Indonesia, Singapore, and Switzerland prior to her appointment as the HS Learning and Tech Coach at WAB. She is passionate about supporting teachers and students in using technology to enhance learning across the curriculum.

As a parent of two teenagers, Keri-Lee recognises the challenges and opportunities that accompany being a parent in this digital age and feels well-placed to support parents in navigating these.

Outside of school, Keri-Lee is an enthusiastic foodie, loves reading Young Adult novels, traveling, and gardening.

Approaching the anniversary of George Floyd's murder and the subsequent global DEIJ mobilization, International School of Dakar's Dr. Nneka Johnson and the Association of International Educators and Leaders of Color's (AIELOC) Kevin Simpson join us to discuss how far the international school community has come and what work still needs to be done. 

Dr. Nneka Johnson is the current Director of Innovation/DEI Coordinator at The International School of Dakar in Senegal, West Africa. She is also a member of the Association of International Schools in Africa (AISA) Professional Learning Design Team.  In her role at ISD she wears many hats which include: Director of Innovation and Technology, DEI Coordinator, coordinating school accreditation, working with the board on the strategic plan, and organizing on-campus professional learning events.  This is her first year leading DEI initiatives.

Prior to ISD, Nneka worked at an Independent School in Atlanta, GA for 13 years and within that time frame she lived in Sydney Australia for six months and worked for a private school as the Deputy Director of Innovation. Nneka holds a BA in Sociology from Queens College in New York City, an MS in Instructional Technology from Georgia State University, and a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from Mercer University in Atlanta.  Her doctoral dissertation centers on the fact that curriculum can change social media usage in adolescents.  Not sure about this sentence

Kevin Simpson owns and operates KDSL Global. He and his team has served thousands of schools, educators, and leaders worldwide in over 25 countries. The majority of his work in education has centered on American curriculum schools overseas. Since 2008, he has been focused on education in the MENA region, assisted numerous schools with accreditation, training, development, and served as a thought partner with investors on school start-up projects.  Simpson is founder of the Association of International Educators and Leaders of Color, co-founder of the UAE Learning Network, leads the GCC ASCD Connected Community. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education and a Master of Education degree in Curriculum and Teaching from Michigan State University (USA).

Sharif El-Mekki is the Founder and CEO of the Center for Black Educator Development. The Center exists to ensure there will be equity in the recruiting, training, hiring, and retention of quality educators that reflect the cultural backgrounds and share common socio-political interests of the students they serve. The Center is developing a nationally relevant model to measurably increase teacher diversity and support Black educators through four pillars: Professional Learning, Pipeline, Policies, and Pedagogy. So far, the Center has developed ongoing and direct professional learning, mentoring, and coaching opportunities for Black teachers and other educators serving students of color.

The Center also carries forth the freedom or liberation school legacy by hosting Freedom School sites that incorporates research-based curricula and exposes high school and college students to the teaching profession to help fuel a pipeline of Black educators.

Prior to founding the Center, El-Mekki served as a nationally recognized principal and U.S. Department of Education Principal Ambassador Fellow. His school, Mastery Charter Shoemaker, was recognized by President Obama and Oprah Winfrey, and was awarded the prestigious EPIC award for three consecutive years as being amongst the top three schools in the country for accelerating students’ achievement levels. The Shoemaker Campus was also recognized as one of the top ten middle school and top ten high schools in the state of Pennsylvania for accelerating the achievement levels of African-American students.

In 2014, El-Mekki founded The Fellowship – Black Male Educators for Social Justice, an organization dedicated to recruiting, retaining, and developing Black male teachers. El-Mekki blogs on Phillys7thWard, is a member of the 8 Black Hands podcast and serves on several boards and committees focused on educational and racial justice.

We are thrilled to have Dana Saxon on the podcast. She is an extraordinary educator with an inspiring story and mission. We have wanted to have Dana on for awhile now and we thought that February would be a perfect time. We celebrate black history month with Dana as we explore what it means for all young people to discover their roots and in particular how powerful it can be for young people who descended from the survivors of slavery. 

Dana Saxon is the Founder & Executive Director of Ancestors unKnown, an education social enterprise with projects in the U.S., U.K., and the Netherlands. Ancestors unKnown provides schools, nonprofit organizations, universities, and corporations with curriculum and workshops related to family history research and other untold histories. After spending nearly 10 years in the education nonprofit sector in the U.S., Dana moved to the Netherlands in 2011 to study the significance of family history research among people in the African diaspora who descend from survivors of slavery. Since then, she’s traveled to multiple cities on multiple continents, introducing new audiences to some of the world’s untold histories and the power of family history research. Dana currently lives in Bristol, U.K., where she's planning to expand the reach and impact of Ancestors unKnown.
